On 21 October 2008, the 13th Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh 2008 officially opened and will run until 19 November 2008. Bangladesh has more poor from Indonesia, but successfully maintain and continually improve the organization of exhibitions biennale (two yearly) international for long 26 years with are participants who come from Asia, Africa, and Europe. Indonesia with the 6th richest natural resources in the world has not been able to hold that event is also held by the biennale, such as Bangladesh.
At the meeting between delegations from the committee Shilpakala Academy, I heard the committee to convey the recognition that Bangladesh is poor in natural resources, poor infrastructure, but has a wealth of artistic tradition that in the era of the creative economy, various art traditions is machine for capital reserves.
The biennale held at the Osmani Memorial Hall, opened by The Chief Adviser Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed of the Head of the Caretaker (interim) Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
I present in Dhaka as a participant 13thAsian Art Biennale Bangladesh 2008, took Bangladesh to see more of the country's poor. However, I feel, are present in the midst of the wealth of art-culture.
I also feel richer, because my three paintings and one sculpture are selected by committee Biennale Bangladesh, witch each titled I Am Back, Here I am, I am Waiting, while the sculpture titled the Family Love.
First Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh was held in 1981 by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. This time, the annual exhibition is followed by 27 countries, namely Chile, China, Egypt, Fiji, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Korea, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Brunei, Turkey, and UAE.
There are 111 foreign artists from these committee works with 244 (painting, sculpture, and installation). While 229 of artists Bangladesh with 194 of works (paintings, sculpture, and installation), exhibited in three places, namely the National Art Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Bangladesh National Museum, and Osmani Memorial Hall. All the works of painting, sculpture, and installation of artists from Indonesia, displayed at the Bangladesh National Museum.
The nine artists on Indonesia involved in the origin of these, they are: 1). Agus C [paintings], 2). Cecilia Patrice [statue], 3). Innes Indreswari Soekanto [statue], 4). Kian Santang [statue], 5). Lidyawati [statue], 6). Maulana Mohamad Pasha [the installation of new media], 7). Monika Ary Kartika Soetjipto [paintings], and 8). Polenk Rediasa [paintings]. 9) Neneng Ferrier [paintings and statue].
Unfortunately, not all artists can participate in opening ceremony of the biennale. Only I, Maulana Muhamad Pasha (Adel Pasha), and Monika Ary Kartika Soetjipto can attend. For one week, the committee provide accommodation for participants who attended.
In the second and third day, held a seminar with the theme of Experiments in New Media in Recent Years, took place in the building Music and Dance Center Auditorium of the Shilpakala Academy. This seminar certainly tiring, but I don’t want to passed. But I am happy to watch the tradition of local dancing, and visits to Bangladesh Folk art and Craft Foundation in Sonargaon, which is located outside the city of Dhaka.
In fact, Biennale Banladesh is not only an exhibition, but also followed with competition witch won by artists from Egypt, Oman, and Bangladesh. For the category of best works won by eight artists which came from Qatar, Pakistan, Korea, Sri Lanka, India, and three from Bangladesh.
How sad, all of contingent of Indonesia can not follow the competition because, according to the committee, the works of artists of Indonesia arrived in Bangladesh late. This delay occurred because the notice from the committee to these artists Indonesia, is too close to the opening day ceremony, even the new artists are given out a week before the opening and works of artists of Indonesia submitted after the original closing date of the competition. It is visible from the date specified by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (in column 7 on the registration of participants).
Delivery of the works via DHL need about 4 - 5 days. In fact, need 7 days a new arrival in Bangladesh. It's part of the work of artists new Indonesian origin arrived in Bangladesh after the opening of biennale.
I and Monika luckily went to Bangladesh with the preschool works. Date October 20 once at 23:00 local time, we arrived, several hours before the opening, the works displayed.
For while, Maulana Adel Pasha has arrived since the 18th of October, because he must to install his work, but Adel Pasha also face difficulties due to limitations of equipment to complete the installation works. Although the installation is not as previously planned, but I see the results still make something of spectators amazed.
I observed works on display dominated by more abstract painting style. Maybe it is because of the origin of the Arabian artists, where the majority of Arabians believes can not figure drawing, especially the human figure, let alone figure the Prophet. But in some walls, I also see some works of contemporary realist.
But in every big event always drawbacks. There is a feeling disappointed with the lack of maintenance in the biennale. However I have to give respect and appreciation, poor countries such as Bangladesh while maintaining the successful arena for the prestigious art can still be held. The committee also has pledged to the Biennale will come, will operate better cultivated.
I ask to my mind, why in our countries of the international biennale can not be prolonged, while there is a biennales is less than the fair selection system, namely to see more of the artists who see how his work. Biennale, which only see the portfolio of artists, according to me, not only works to be talking.
